Omaha Hi Lo: Fundamental Overview

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most complicated but popular poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once invisible variation, has expanded in acceptance so rapidly.

Omaha hi-low starts exactly like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are handed out to every player. A round of betting ensues where players can bet, check, or fold. 3 cards are handed out, this is known as the flop. One more round of wagering happens. Once all the players have either called or dropped out, a further card is flipped on the turn. an additional round of betting happens at which point the river card is revealed. The gamblers must attempt to make the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is the point where a number of players get baffled. Contrasted to Hold’em, in which the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player has to use precisely 3 cards on the board, and precisely two hole cards. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot can be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the strongest hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the very same notion in nearly every poker game.

A lower hand is more complicated, but certainly free’s up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the weakest hand that might be made, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there’s no low hand available, the high hand wins the entire pot.

While it seems complex at the start, following a few rounds you will be agile enough to pick up on the fundamental nuances of the game with ease. Seeing as you have people wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as so many cards are being used at the same time, Omaha hi low offers an overwhelming collection of betting possibilities and seeing that you have numerous players battling for the high hand, along with a few battling for the low. If you prefer a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha 8 or better.
