Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most complex but favored poker variations. It is a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for action from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once obscure game, has increased in popularity so quickly.
Omaha 8 or better begins like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to each player. A round of betting follows in which players can wager, check, or fold. 3 cards are handed out, this is called the flop. One more sequence of betting happens. After all the players have either called or dropped out, an additional card is revealed on the turn. an additional round of wagering follows at which point the river card is flipped. The gamblers must attempt to put together the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is the point where many entrants can get baffled. Unlike Hold’em, where the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player has to use precisely three cards from the board, and exactly 2 cards from their hand. No more, not a single card less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot could be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is just how it sounds. It’s the best possible hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the same notion in nearly all poker games.
A low hand is more difficult, but really opens up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the weakest hand that might be put together, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no lower hand available, the high hand wins the whole pot.
It may seem difficult initially, following a couple of rounds you will be agile enough to get the base subtleties of the game with ease. Since you have players betting for the low and betting for the high, and since such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better provides an exciting assortment of betting options and seeing that you have numerous individuals shooting for the high hand, and many trying for the low. If you love a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it’s worth your time to compete in Omaha/8.
