Omaha Hi-Low: Fundamental Overview

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most difficult but well-loved poker games. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant game, has grown in acceptance so rapidly.

Omaha/8 starts like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to each player. A round of betting ensues where gamblers can wager, check, or drop out. 3 cards are given out, this is known as the flop. A further round of wagering happens. After all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, a further card is revealed on the turn. an additional round of wagering follows at which point the river card is revealed. The players will have to put together the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where some entrants often get confused. Unlike Texas Holdem, where the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player must utilize precisely three cards on the board, and exactly two hole cards. No more, not a single card less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It is the best possible hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the very same concept in just about every poker game.

The low hand is more complicated, but certainly opens up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that might be made, with the lowest being A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no lower hand presented, the higher hand takes the complete pot.

It may seem complex at the start, following a couple of hands you will be agile enough to get the fundamental nuances of the game easily enough. Seeing as you have people wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better provides an overwhelming collection of betting possibilities and seeing that you have many players battling for the high, as well as a few battling for the low. If you love a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it is worth your time to participate in Omaha/8.
