Omaha Hi Lo: Fundamental Outline

[ English ]

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most difficult but popular poker variations. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites play from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant variation, has expanded in acceptance so amazingly.

Omaha 8 or better begins like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to every player. A sequence of betting follows in which players can bet, check, or fold. 3 cards are handed out, this is called the flop. One more sequence of betting happens. Once all the players have either called or folded, an additional card is flipped on the turn. an additional round of betting follows and then the river card is revealed. The entrants will need to make the strongest high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where a few players can get confused. Contrasted to Texas Holdem, where the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player has to use exactly 3 cards from the board, and exactly two hole cards. Not a single card more, no less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot can be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It’s the strongest possible hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the very same concept in almost every poker game.

A low hand is more difficult, but really opens up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the weakest hand that could be put together, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there’s no low hand available, the higher hand wins the complete pot.

It may seem complicated initially, after a few rounds you will be agile enough to pick up on the fundamental nuances of the game with ease. Seeing as you have people betting for the low and wagering for the high, and since so many cards are being used at the same time, Omaha High-Low offers an overwhelming assortment of betting options and seeing that you have numerous individuals battling for the high hand, and many battling for the low. If you enjoy a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha hi low.
